Materials you will need in
order to make a foundational hat:
-
Buckram -
buckram is a very stiff material which contains glue sizing. It comes in a
variety of weights. You will usually want to use 2ply buckram
for most reenactment hats. Some stores will try to sell you crinoline so keep
a weather eye out. I have had great success with California Millinery in Los
Angeles, CA
-
Millinery wire
Millinery wire comes in a variety of weights, the higher the # the thinner the
wire. Millinery wire is a specialty wire which is covered in cotton and nylon
threads. I usually use # 14 wire in my hat brims, tips, and head plates.
-
French Fleece or wadding
This stretchy material looks a lot like cotton batting that you might use in a
quilt except that it is much thinner and more stretchy. It is used over the
foundation of a hat between the buckram and the over fabric. It allows a hat
to have a much cleaner line as well as making the hat look more finished. If
you do not use French fleece or wadding on your hat, the over fabric will look
a little odd and lumpy over the buckram.
-
Millinery Needles
Millinery needles have an extra heavy eye in order to sew through heavy and
reluctant fabrics. Almost all of a hat is made by hand, so having a good
supply of millinery needles is very important.
Patience! Lots and lots of patience!!
